Community awareness programme to prevent child marriages

Holy Cross College (Autonomous) in collaboration with Gold King Charitable Trust has successfully organized the Reaching the Unreached Neighbourhood(RUN) programme. The Commerce SF II students of Holy Cross College(Autonomous) have actively volunteered for this initiative under the supervision of Gold King Charitable Trust. Through RUN, we aimed to facilitate sustainable development in communities and implemented several programme toward this goal.

On 21.01.2023, a community awareness programme was held inPechipparai for residents to learn about the rights of children, as well as the causes and consequences of child marriage. The Marriage Prohibition Act 2006 was also discussed to prevent such marriages from occurring. In attendance were Mr. Y. Devadoss, President of Pechiparai Panchayat, Mrs.Cathrine Mary (Managing Trustee & Director of Gold King Charitable Trust), Mrs. M. Sowmiya (CHILDLINE Team Member), and Mrs. Jemila (Assistant Professor of Holy Cross College). Additionally, 55 II-year commerce students from Holy Cross College (Autonomous), three ward members, and an MSW trainee participated in the programme which raised awareness for the prevention of child marriages among 500 community members.

Say No to Drugs

In another community event on 25.03.2023 from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm at Mela Soorangudy, a rally and awareness programme promoting   Say No to Drugs were organized by Holy Cross College starting at their campus leading up to Mela Soorangudy main junction where attendees received information to avoid substance abuse issues that are relevant today more than ever before!

The programme was attended by several distinguished individuals, including Dr. S. SahayaSelvi, Principal of Holy Cross College, Mrs. D. Cathrine Mary, Director of Gold King Charitable Trust, Ms. S. Jemila, AssistantProfessor of Holy Cross College, as well as Ms. Mehala and Ms. Rekha from the CHILDLINE team. Members of the local community in Mela Soorangudy were also present for this important event. During the ceremony, all participants took an oath to Say No to Drugs and pledged to call 1098 if any child needs care and protection. This was a significant step towards creating a safer and healthier community for all children in the area.

During the rally, students from RUN carried posters with the message Say No to Drugs and raised awareness about drug abuse prevention through their campaign. Following the rally, Gold King Charitable Trust organized a community awareness programme where RUN students visited households in Mela Soorangudy and explained the adverse effects of alcohol addiction on individuals and families. They also provided information on helpline numbers (7010363173) for reporting narcotics sales and child helpline number 1098 for children in need of care and protection. Additionally, notices highlighting these helpline numbers were distributed to community members by the RUN team as part of this programme. As a result, 125 adults, 52 college students, and 32 children received awareness through this initiative that helped spread knowledge on child welfare issues and drug abuse prevention, while also distributing IEC materials that will continue to educate the community on these topics.
